The opulent eye (2015-16)
The Opulent Eye addresses the value we place on particular spaces. The series depicts vitrines and urns. It is not their physical structure that interests me but rather the space that is captured within them. Ghost images of underlying layers of paint, drawings, and collage hint at the history of each mixed media piece.
Putting a seashell, dish, artifact, or any other item inside of a display case instantly classifies that object as having significant worth. I am fascinated with the life force that exists inside of these parameters and the ability of an object to become something special by being separated and protected from the rest of the world. All reference material was pulled from Christie’s auction catalogue, The Opulent Eye, which “presents the finest furniture, sculpture and works of art from the 19th century.”
