When you buckle up and devote yourself to seeing an idea through, interesting things can happen. The end result is always something you could have never predicted - it might be awesome, it might be awful.

Sometimes I get hung up on asking why I’m making a particular thing and all that thinking can make the making stop completely and I have to remind myself that the reason I’m making something is because I feel compelled to do so. It’s being inside the mystery of things, not finding the answers. Returning to the initial spark of the idea helps to get back on track.

Retracing the evolution of a project is a lot like reading a Choose Your Own Adventure book. (If you grew up in the 80’s, you know what I’m talking about.) Every few pages you got to make a choice of which path the story would take and the string of choices made for a unique ending. To a bookworm kid, it was pure magic.

Ghost Tapir is the bridge connecting the last series (Talisman) to the new one (Dream Flower Guides). If this new body of work was in Choose Your Own Adventure book format, it’d look like this:

It started with a dream about flowers. The dream led to purchasing a 6”x6” sketchbook to fill with flower drawings. Those drawings needed to be mounted to wood panels and the panels needed platforms, then the platforms (obviously) needed clay critters. The critters needed stories and finally the stories and images of the new flower/critter altars needed a book to house them. More info to come!

For the last year or so, when I write a story or make a painting, the main character of the work is Lolly. She (usually) isn’t visible in the composition but we’re either following the path from one of her adventures or experiencing a landscape that provided her with some big knowledge. Dream Flower Guides is a collection of guides that accompany Lolly on her journeys.

Texas is currently hot as all get out so this month I’m sharing Snow Patches from the Studio Shop because cold temps are inconceivable at this point and I need to remember that snow does exist.
